Sheesham Wood Furniture Guide: Buying Tips & Care

Pure Sheesham wood nesting tables with polished finish

Sheesham wood is widely used in South Asian furniture because of its distinctive grain and suitability for many furniture styles. When shopping for Sheesham furniture, the most useful question is not simply “Is it Sheesham?” but where the solid wood is used, what other materials are present and how the piece is finished. This guide gives you a practical checklist for buying and caring for wooden furniture.

What to check before buying Sheesham furniture

1. Ask where solid wood is used

Furniture can combine solid Sheesham with MDF, plywood, upholstery materials or other supporting components. This is not automatically a problem: different materials can serve different purposes. What matters is that the product description clearly explains the construction. For beds, sofas and tables, ask about the frame, top, panels and decorative parts separately.

2. Look at the finish

A natural or matte finish usually keeps more of the wood grain visible, while paint or opaque finishes create a more uniform look. Neither approach is universally better; choose according to the interior you want and the maintenance you are comfortable with. If you are ordering a custom finish, ask to confirm the color before production.

3. Check joints, balance and movement

For tables and chairs, the piece should feel stable on a level surface. Doors and drawers should open smoothly, and visible joints should look neat and intentional. On upholstered furniture, also ask what is used beneath the fabric and how the seat is supported.

How to care for wooden furniture

Dust gently

Use a clean, soft, dry or slightly damp cloth for routine dusting, then wipe the surface dry. Avoid leaving standing water on wooden surfaces.

Protect surfaces from heat and moisture

Use coasters, mats or protective pads under hot, wet or abrasive objects. Wipe spills promptly rather than allowing moisture to sit on the finish.

Be careful with strong sunlight and heat sources

Long periods of strong direct sunlight can change the appearance of many finishes and fabrics. Where practical, place furniture away from intense heat sources and use curtains or blinds in rooms that receive strong sun for long periods.

Move furniture properly

Lift furniture when repositioning it instead of dragging it across the floor. For larger pieces, use enough people to support the frame safely rather than pulling from decorative parts, arms or panels.

Custom furniture: confirm the specification

When a piece is made to order, keep the agreed specification clear: dimensions, wood and supporting materials, finish, fabric, included items and delivery estimate. This is especially important when you are ordering from a reference image because the construction of the final piece may differ from what is visible in the picture.

A simple buying checklist

  • Ask which parts are solid Sheesham.
  • Confirm any MDF or other engineered material used.
  • Check dimensions and room access.
  • Confirm the finish or paint color.
  • For upholstered furniture, confirm fabric and cushioning.
  • Ask for the current making and delivery estimate.
